FTTH (Fiber To The Home)

FTTH stands for Fiber to the Home or Fiber to the Premises may be offices. It is an idea of bringing high speed networking i.e. high speed internet, digital television and telephone service to residences using fiber optic cables. It is a broadband telecommunications system which is based on fiber optic cables and associated optical electronics for delivery of multiple advanced services to homes and businesses. This will provided optical fiber system to the homes by developments by partnering with developers or constructors. The different ways of connecting to internet such as cable modem IPTV. The fiber network delivers true high speed broadband services. The network will deliver 100Mbps (megabits per second) and will deliver higher speeds upto 1Gbps ( gigabit per second) in the near future. This is around 10 to 200 times faster than DSL broadband services. The backbone network speed for FTTH presently is 1Gbps or 2.5Gbps & in coming future to 10Gbps.

Fiber to the Home is relatively new and fast growing method of providing very higher bandwidth to consumers and also for businesses, and thereby enabling more robust any kind of services. But the FTTH systems can also cost considerably more than DSL or existing cable services as they will be requiring the installation of an entirely new set of connections for home users.

FTTH Technology

Fibre To The Home (FTTH) refers to a broadband telecommunication system based on fibre optic cables and associated optical electronics for delivery of multiple advanced services such as telephone, broadband internet and television to homes and businesses.

This new communication medium will be provided by optical fibre systems to residential communities and commercial developments by partnering with multiple service providers.

Used For NGN / FTTH

Technology Used Primarily for Next Generation Network/FTTH:

The progress in the technology, the need for larger bandwidths and the complexity of ATM forced the FSAN group to look for better technology. Gigabit Passive Optical Network(GPON) standardization work was initiated by FSAN in the year 2001 for designing networks over 1Gbps. GPON architecture offers converged data and voice services at upto 2.5 Gbps. GPON enables transport of multiple services in their native format, specifically TDM and data. In order to enable easy transition from BPON to GPON, many functions of BPON are reused for GPON. In January 2003, the GPON standards were ratified by ITU-T and are known as ITU-T Recommendations G.984.1, G.984.2 and G.984.3. The GPON’s uses Generic Framing Procedure (GFP) protocol to provide support for both voice and data oriented services. A big advantage of GPON over other schemes is that interfaces to all the main services are provided and in GFP enabled networks packets belonging to different protocols can be transmitted in their native formats.

Ethernet equipment vendors formed Ethernet in the First Mile Alliance (EFMA) to work on a architecture for FTTH as Ethernet is a dominant protocol in Local Area Network. EPON based FTTH was adopted by IEEE standard IEEE802.3ah in September 2004. Adopting Ethernet technology in the access network would make uniform protocol at the customer end simplifying the network management. Single protocol in Local Area Network, Access Network and Backbone network enables easy roll out of FTTH. EPON standards networking community renamed the term ‘last mile’ to ‘first mile’ to symbolize its importance and significance access part of the network. EFM introduced the concept of Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (EPONs), in which a point to multipoint (P2MP) network topology is implemented with passive optical splitters. EPON, is largely vendor-driven standard and it is fundamentally similar to ATM-PON but transports Ethernet frames/packets instead of ATM cells. It specified minimum standardization and product differentiation, also it has decided not to standardize the Bandwidth allocation algorithm (DBA), TDM and ATM support, Security, Authentication, WDM Overlay Plan, support for Analog Video Protection, Diagnostics, Monitoring,, Compliance with existing OSS leaving these to the vendors to choose the best.

FTTH Better Than Other Technology

To make your home intelligent and future ready, it is essential to ensure fast internet speed reaches every corner of your house. This is essential no matter what the purpose is, be it home automation, video conferencing, live streaming, distance learning, etc. And when FTTH becomes available throughout the community, it makes your entire living experience intelligent. Astonishingly fast internet access coupled with delivery of high definition IPTV and voice over IP services are some of the tantalising benefits of the FTTH technology over DSL, data card and broadband connections.
